When it comes to series, Apple TV+ has a lot to offer. Instep takes a look.
Apple TV+ made history earlier this year, becoming the first streaming service to win the Best Picture Oscar with its film CODA. But it’s not just movies that the streamer excels at. Several of its series, too, have been impressive. Here are three of their standout offerings that you should certainly check out if you get the chance.
The Afterparty
(Season 1)
Starring: Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson,
Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Glazer,
Jamie Demetriou, and Dave Franco
While the prospect of sitting through yet another murder mystery may not fill you with unbridled excitement, The Afterparty really does not disappoint. An inventive setup finds each suspect relaying their version of events in a different genre – action, thriller, musical, animation, and so on – as a detective (Tiffany Haddish) tries to solve the murder of a popstar (Dave Franco). With an excellent cast – led by Haddish and Sam Richardson (who plays the prime suspect, fumbling as he tries to clear his name) – and a fun layout, The Afterparty keeps you guessing while delivering laughs, drama, and even a few amusing songs.
Severance
(Season 1)
Starring: Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette
Intriguing, riveting, and altogether brilliant, Severance is televisual perfection. The psychological thriller centres on a group of characters that have chosen to split their consciousness, separating their work life and personal life. Amidst a jumble of complications and a web of conspiracies, Severance takes viewers on a fresh, mysterious journey. With an original, unsettling premise and terrific acting, this Apple TV+ series deserves an A+.
Ted Lasso
(Season 2)
Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, and Sarah Niles
The critically acclaimed Ted Lasso continues its charming tale in in its second season, as the titular protagonist continues his attempts to coach an English Premier League football team despite his lack of experience coaching soccer. The cast, once again, delivers winsome performances while the series gives us more feel-good comedy and heartfelt drama. A third season has been commissioned so it might be a good idea to stream the first two before the third instalment arrives!
