A look at some of the standout television shows now available on the streaming service

etflix is going through a rough patch. The streaming giant has been losing subscribers – a first quarter drop of 200,000 this year has wiped $50 billion off the company’s market valuation – and wading into hot water with some of its controversial content (including the new Ricky Gervais comedy special, SuperNature, which has drawn backlash for transphobic jokes). But even under the shadow of its many troubles, the platform is sturdily churning out binge-worthy projects. Television series have long been the streamer’s strong suit, and Netflix is continuing to provide a steady supply of solid programs, including these new releases that are now available for your binge-viewing pleasure.
Ozark
(Season 4, part 2)
Starring: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, and Julia
Garner
The second part of the crime drama’s final season wraps up the story of the Byrde family. After sinking into the quicksand of the crime world with each passing episode for three seasons, Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) are attempting to extricate themselves from the money laundering mess that has taken over their lives. But will they receive the comeuppance they deserve? Or will they get out unscathed while leaving a trail of destruction in their wake?
Powered by solid performances by the ever-reliable Jason Bateman, the wonderful Laura Linney, and a spectacular Julia Garner, the season unveils all the answers, while the tragic finale delivers a memorable gut punch guaranteed to leave a mark.
Russian Doll
(Season 2)
Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Greta Lee, Elizabeth Ashley, Charlie Barnett, and Chloë Sevigny
The long-awaited second season of Russian Doll reunites us with Nadia (the inimitable Natasha Lyonne) as she goes on another wibbly wobbly timey wimey adventure. Having escaped the time loop of the first season after reliving her 36th birthday party an unadvisable amount of times, Nadia now finds herself ten days away from her 40th birthday and traveling back and forth in time on a fantastical train while occasionally embodying her mother (Chloë Sevigny) and searching for missing gold Krugerrands in an attempt to change the course of her family’s history.
It’s not quite as riveting as the terrific first outing, but the trippy second season’s imaginative twists and turns are sure to vibe with fans of offbeat comedy dramas.
The Lincoln Lawyer
(Season 1)
Starring: Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, Angus Sampson, and Christopher Gorham
Originally developed for CBS before moving to Netflix, The Lincoln Lawyer brings Mickey Haller to the small screen for 10 episodes of legal drama. The season is based on The Brass Verdict, Michael Connelly’s second novel featuring the Los Angeles criminal defence attorney, and finds the protagonist (portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) struggling to re-establish his career after an accident and battle with addiction. The main case at the centre of the season revolves around the trial of a tech billionaire (Christopher Gorham) who is accused of murdering his wife and her lover.
There is nothing particularly novel about the series and its execution, but The Lincoln Lawyer will still effectively deliver your fix of suspenseful legal drama with the added bonus of watching the lovely Neve Campbell and Becki Newton onscreen once again.
