Roger Federer, the tennis player who calls Switzerland home, may not be number one in rankings anymore but in terms of popularity, he is not only the most popular tennis player in the world but an athlete whose famous fans include royalty Kate Middleton, Anne Wintour, Bradley Cooper along with well, most of the world.
Teaming the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) up with an Academy-Award winning actor Anne Hathaway, for a tourism commercial is probably the most welcoming thing Switzerland tourism has done since restrictions on coronavirus have eased up.
In the commercial - viewed over 55 million times since releasing approximately two weeks ago on YouTube - we find Federer and Anne sitting before what is supposed to be a commercial featuring the two with the team. It opens with scenic views and its clear in a funny spirit that they are not in it. Anne and Federer talk about how the actual ad doesn’t really feature them.
The director goes on to explain how electric their chemistry was (at which point both smile a little) as views of Switzerland’s lush views are shown.
Both get a little bummed out and note how they were asked to shoot 22 times over a glacier not in sight. It is more like Anne Hathaway and Roger Federer participating in a comedy show.
As scenic views of Switzerland are shown, one person adds how Roger has great abs except that, too, is not really part of the commercial. The motto here is simple: No one upstages the Grand tour of Switzerland. An advertisement within an advertisement, its tongue-in-cheek, satirical and most of all, both Hathaway and Federer click.
As they walk out of the room after learning they will be upstaged by Switzerland, Roger apologizes to Anne for roping her in.
She tells him to ask Meryl (Streep) the next time and he says in nonchalant fashion that he did but she passed.
Nothing like the Oscars where Anne Hathaway was left to fend for herself while James Franco was another planet, it is like two famous friends learning even they can’t surpass the lush, beautiful world of Switzerland. Hilarious, satirical, it is one of the coolest advertisements we’ve seen in a while. Check it out!
