Lt Col M. Jamil Khan was an avid golfer. Many in Karachi's golfing community saw him as a father figure who had a great passion for golf. Even during his last days when it wasn't possible for Col Jamil to play on his favourite course at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club (DAC&GC), he would visit the Club and just sit and watch golfers finishing their round at the 18th green.
He passed away a few years back but his golfing legacy is continued by his family. His sons Imran and Usman Jamil are avid golfers. His grandson Farris Jamil is also a promising junior golfer. In his memory, his family holds the Lt Col M. Jamil Khan Memorial Golf Tournament at DAC&GC every year.
Over the years the tournament has become a major event on the club's golf calendar and attracts a big field of players for various categories.
This year's edition held on March 26-27 also turned out to be a big success. The two-day tournament witnessed exciting contests in various categories.
In the amateurs category, Hamza Ghani won the gross title with Pakistan No. 1 Omar Khalid finishing second. Abdullah Arif finished third. In the amateurs' (net) category, Kashif Shabbir won the top prize while Usman Masood finished second followed by Waheeduddin. Other prize winners included Fahad Ayub, Hamza Sheikh, Jameeluddin, Hamza Ali, Humera Khalid, Fazila Kareem, Maj Muhammad Suhail, Maj Talat Lodhi, Air Cdre Khalid Hussain, Shoaib Alavi, Col Ashar Rizwan, Faisal Akif Memon, Jawad Amjad and Saad Rabanni.
The tournament concluded with a well-attended prize distribution ceremony. Lt Gen Hilal Hussain, President Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF), was the chief guest at the occasion. He hailed Imran Jamil and his family for hosting the prestigious tournament in memory of Col Jamil, who was an avid golfer. The ceremony was attended by close family members of the late Col Jamil as a large number of golfers.
