Fashion weeks are an apt way of staying up to date with not just fashion, but also the latest beauty trends. The fact is that fashion weeks are where trends are born; one gets to witness what colour palette will rule the season, which silhouettes are trending, etc. When it comes to beauty trends, it is through these fashion shows that celebrity stylists make sure to bring out the best of their runway looks onto the ramps, season after season.
Recently, we witnessed international fashion weeks where statement-making beauty trends emerged such as bleached eyebrows, shimmering metallic hues on the eyes and much more. However, one trend that caught our attention was one bold makeup detail and that was the different variations of red and we are obsessed.
All set to make some striking statements? Here are four ways to incorporate red in your look du jour.
Bold red eyes
Dramatic pops of red across Julia Fox’s eyes caught our fancy at LaQuan Smith, where makeup artist Sheika Daley went with bold cat eyes and a ‘red backlit effect’. According to Dalye, the red look is all about a strong, fierce cat-eye with a suggestion of a red silhouette. She achieved this look using a black eyeliner and red lip liner. The rest of the skin was kept fresh, with glowy highlights, contouring and brown lip colour to keep the emphasis on the eyes. Moreover, Frankie Boyd went with wing-like blocks of crimson on the eyes at Dion Lee. Though it might be a little too dramatic to pull off in real life, you can try different variations of this trend and rock in style.
Power red pouts
There is nothing classier than opting for a swipe of red on the lips. It’s a classic for a reason: the power-red lipstick channels easy confidence. If you want to make the always classic red lip feel fresh, then all you need to do is experiment with shape and finish. You can either add a slick of clear gloss to your lip colour just like makeup legend Pat McGrath did for Miu Miu for that light-catching, vinyl effect, or to achieve the ‘90s look you can go for a cool-toned red.
Nails on fire
Incorporating a colour in your beauty regime in no way means you have to apply it all over. If you are not bold enough to pull off a crimson lip or a pop of red on your eyes, then go ahead and paint your nails red. Whether you opt for shimmery or matte polish, red looks classy either way. Moreover, you can go for gradient nails and paint each nail a slightly different shade of red.
Ombre lips
Ombre makes everything look cooler and is in fact super wearable. We saw the ombre effect - a fuchsia-tinted red with a blurred finish - presented at Dries Van Noten show. Though ombre lips are actually a work of art, here is the most realistic way to recreate them at home. Start by applying concealer – slightly lighter than your skin tone - all over the lips and blend well so that your natural lip colour is muted. Then apply red lipstick of your choice at the edges of your lips. Remember, keeping the intense part of the shade at the edges is crucial.
Now blend it out using a fluffy brush so that the centre of your lips is lighter in shade compared to the dark edges. You can also use as a darker lip liner at the edges and blend it well with red lip colour to achieve the perfect ombre lip.
