The team behind The Matrix, one of the most influential sci-fi films in the last few decades, comes together for a new film.
The team behind The Matrix, one of the most influential sci-fi films in the last few decades, comes together for a new film. Before 1999, phrases like ‘glitch in the matrix’ were not exactly common vernacular. But The Matrix (1999), featuring Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves, completely changed how sci-fi was perceived. No film has had such an impact on the fabric of society with computer science becoming a cool subject, inspiring white hats, and a general interest in the genre, with every film expected to pass the standard set by The Matrix franchise. We can’t wait to see what has been assembled after three films in The Matrix series!
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss
Keanu Reeves has been doing well in his career with the John Wick franchise coming up with a fourth film in 2022. His career moves and personality is still impressive to critics and fans. However, for some unfathomable reason, after a genre-bending fan-favourite like The Matrix and its sequels (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions), Carrie-Anne Moss has had to struggle as an actor significantly, with roles drying up quickly. The new Matrix film has given Carrie-Ann Moss - reprising the role of Trinity – a seat which is front and center in Hollywood. It just might allow substantial roles to follow the Canadian actress.
Star crossed lovers: Trinity and Neo
When Keanu Reeves received a star at the Canadian Walk of Fame, guess who accompanied him – even to the stage? Carrie-Anne Moss. As the actor spoke upon receiving the honour, Moss looked on at her accomplished acting friend. The two actors, who are good friends, still seem to have the chemistry we first experienced in The Matrix, only this time, the dial has been turned way up. If the machines are
rising, so is Neo-Trinity.
Lana Wachowski’s vision
Unlike the previous three films that were co-written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski (as Andy and Larry), this film sees Lana going solo after a 20-year-gap because there is now a story to tell. Just imagine if Neo had taken the blue pill, would he be Neo? Set in San Francisco, the new film shows Neo on blue pills finding clues that lead him to Trinity and realizing the real world and the ones designed by machines. The film is pretty much a love story at its heart (more so than ever) but it is completely different from typical love-imbued films like a Titanic or The Notebook. In fact, the film has many action sequences executed as the original films. It is also an effort that might redeem the third film in The Matrix franchise (The Matrix Revolutions) that felt a little like being stuck in a messy video game.
A different cast
Not all actors from the first three films will be reprising their role, though. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is essaying Morpheus, a character made iconic by Lawrence Fishburne. Similarly, Agent Smith will be played by Jonathan Groff, which had been Hugo Weaving’s role in the original three films. However, the film's cast is still an all-star showcase with Jada Smith returning as Niobe and joining the likes of Christina Ricci, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jones taking on supporting roles to Trinity and Neo's epic love story.
