Long gone are the days when Mahira Khan was a VJ on music channels interviewing celebrities or hosting a show. In 2021, Mahira Khan not only resumed acting but did so while experimenting with OTT mediums and reappearing in music videos.
Music videos
In 2021, Mahira Khan went back to the music video medium in thrilling fashion and on more than one
occasion. She appeared in multiple videos with artists such as Atif Aslam (‘Ajnabi’) after a decade; their last smash hit was ‘Hona Tha Pyar’ from Bol (2011). We also saw Mahira Khan in the video for Azaan Sami Khan’s lovelorn single ‘Tu’. Khan also became the ambassador for Peshawar Zalmi (from Pakistan Super League) once again.
To that end, she featured in the music video of
‘Kingdom’ and joined
wonder-boy Abdullah
Siddiqui ft. Altamash Sever and prolific faces Esra
Bilgic, Hania Amir and
Ali Rehman for the
anthem.
Digital dive
With Prince Charming, a short film helmed by Sheheryar Munawar, Mahira Khan also made her digital foray. The short, backed by See Prime (an emerging OTT platform) also featured Zahid Ahmed and was about a couple trapped in a loveless marriage.
In producer’s chair
If the aforementioned weren’t enough, Mahira Khan is now producing a film as well by joining forces with Tapmad TV, a digital video
platform offering live streaming and access to over 80+ channels.
Titled Baarwan Khiladi, it will make its debut on Tapmad TV. When Mahira Khan announced the film, she said on social media, “A coming of age story set against the backdrop of the OG of all games — cricket. A story about friendships, relationships, unity, failure, success, love and courage. A small peak into a labour of love and hard work … from all of us to all of you.”
The cast includes Daniyal Zafar, Kinza Hashmi, Mohsin Gillani, Saba Faisal, Sarmad Khoosat, Mira Sethi as well as promising new entrants. The actor-turned-producer also noted, “I would have no one better to be my co-pilot in this trip with me other than Nina Kashif.”
Shot in Lahore, Mahira further said about the film, “It’s a beautiful story with cricket as its main theme, there’s a hint of a love story and a mix of emotions and family drama.”
Television
With Covid-19’s global life-altering and threatening emergence, the business of cinema took a massive hit due to how the infectious virus spreads and remains cure-less even as vaccinations are worked upon constantly. In the absence of cinema, Mahira Khan went back to the medium that made her Pakistan’s present sweetheart (or favourite cousin) via television. Her journey may have begun earlier but it was with Humsafar that Mahira Khan became a fan-favourite. With the serial Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay, (based on Umera Ahmed’s novel), her return after many years reminded fans why they adore Mahira in the first place as she shone across co-stars Usman Mukhtar among others.
