Television plays into our love for emotion and whether it’s a romantic drama or a romantic comedy, we just can’t get enough of these sagas. Most of us have certain TV dramas and/or movies in mind that we repeatedly watch without ever getting bored. In many cases, it is the undeniable chemistry between the main leads followed by equally magnificent performances that make the case. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that our commitment to certain serials can boil down to the power of the reel-life couple.

Intriguing, well-sketched characters are another reason why on-screen couples usually become an instant hit. Imagine what would Titanic be without the spark between Jack and Rose? Would we be as interested in Pretty Woman if it wasn’t for the sizzling chemistry between Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis, played by the enigmatic Julia Roberts and Richard Gere? There are many such pairings and our entertainment industry is not immune to this probability.

Here are seven of our favourite on-screen couples that have tied with proverbial knot with us because of their intense chemistry and why we want to see more of them in the future…

Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan

Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan are Pakistan’s premium, contemporary on-screen couple and though they haven’t been seen together in a drama for eons, they still top our list. We have been in love with this reel-life couple since they were first cast in the popular drama serial Humsafar (2011). While the two have not appeared together in any other play since then, they’ve been seen together in several commercials that have been quick and smart to cast them. Mahira and Fawad have paired up for Bilal Lashari’s The Legend of Maula Jatt, the release of which has been delayed due to various reasons including the pandemic, but it is highly anticipated regardless. The two actors are also scheduled to work with each other in Fawad Khan’s home production, Nelofer. Between one drama, a series of ad appearances and potential films on the card, the interest in this reel couple remains just as much it was almost a decade ago.

Ahad Raza Mir

The now real-life couple Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir are one of the most unconventional couples in the entertainment industry. They’ve appeared in drama serials like Yakeen Ka Safar, Aangan as well as suspense thriller Yeh Dil Mera and will soon be seen in the web series Dhoop Ki Deewar. Married in real life, this couple shies away from public limelight and prefers to keep things private. But when they do appear together, it’s based on selective judgment followed by stunning performances from both of them.

Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi

Presently appearing in drama serial Dil Na Umeed Toh Nahi, Yumna Zaidi and Wahaj Ali are making waves with their brilliant performances. The drama that has been made in collaboration with Kashf Foundation tackles social issues, such as prostitution, child abuse and trafficking, all pertinent to our society. However, other than the social messaging embedded in the serial, what gives viewers moments of relief and happiness is the chemistry and bond that Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi share as Jamshed and Allah Rakhi. We can only hope to see them work together in the near future as well.

Farhan Saeed and Iqra Aziz

This on-screen couple stole our hearts in the popular drama serial, Suno Chanda and its sequel Suno Chanda 2. The versatile actress Iqra Aziz and singer-actor Farhan Saeed essayed the roles of Jiya and Arsal, respectively. The duo has been seen arguing and teasing each other in both seasons. In fact, their amazing on-screen chemistry, fuelled by their love-hate relationship, kept the audiences glued to their TV screens. We can’t wait to see when the two will appear next.

Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat

This is another reel-life couple that works together so well. Mehwish Hayat and Humayun Saeed first appeared in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, which became the highest-grossing film of 2015. A year later, they appeared in drama serial Dillagi and sizzled. The duo once again shared the screen in Nadeem Baig’s Punjab Nahi Jaungi that also went on to become a box office super hit. The two are indeed a public favourite, and share strong chemistry that keeps the audience hooked to every project they take on.

Feroze Khan and Hania Amir

We saw them share screen space for the first time in drama serial Ishqiya and the chemistry between the two was so strong that it left audiences wanting more. Hania Aamir played the role of Rumi, a confident and honest girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Feroze Khan, on the other hand, portrayed the character of Hamza, who marries Rumi to take revenge from his ex-girlfriend (Rumi’s elder sister). As sordid and convoluted as the story was, we loved Hania and Feroze’s relationship in the drama and can’t wait for their next project together.

Actress Maya Ali first shared the screen with Sheheryar Munawar in Asim Raza’s second feature film, the all-star Parey Hut Love (PHL). The two shared brilliant onscreen chemistry in the film, and as their beautiful story unravelled before us, the duo made our hearts melt. At present, they can be seen in drama serial Pehli Si Muhabbat, which is a roller coaster of emotions, and we are absolutely loving them.
