With the inception of social media and its widespread use in Pakistan, a majority of the population now depends on the medium for a plethora of reasons. Social media has become the most reliable means of communication in the 21st Century. Applications like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat have become the leading places the youth spend their time at. In 2020, Facebook accounted for over 33 million users, Instagram 6.4 million users and Snapchat 4.4 million users in Pakistan. However, there are some challenges associated with the widespread instant means of communication. Social media has the capacity of giving rise to a toxic atmosphere where the only purpose of engagement is to prove how one person’s intellect and understanding is better than the others. These online wars to prove who is more aware and woke have become quite the norm rather than exception in the world of social media users. On the flip side, this has also become a way individuals can reach out to millions of people and express themselves creatively. People with thousands of followers on Instagram have caught on the label of ‘influencers’. These influencers constantly come up with content to post online in order to endorse their brand image and engage and inspire their followers. Another social media application that has recently become very popular is TikTok. This application helps users produce creative videos and music clips using user-friendly tools available on the platform. Some use this application to reach people they would never have met otherwise. This way, social media has become the perfect retreat for those trying to raise their voice against the status quo. The recent GameStock saga further showcases the power of social media — which stems through collective action. The big shots of Wall Street were left helpless in the face of apparently inexperienced internet users at home, due to the power of collective action and the value of democratising information.
