Sifting through an endless range of trends that women worked through in the past decade, here are top choices of those that will carry on into 2020.
These past ten years (2010 to 2020) was a decade marked by a contemporary shift in what the world considers beautiful, the key word being inclusivity. This decade was all about celebrating individuality and the uniqueness of each and every human being. The decade reinforced that the strength of the cosmetic industry is in creating looks that are inclusive when it comes to defining beauty; complexion and colour complexes were pushed back, hoping to restrain them as thing of the past. Real women and models with unique features were brought onto catwalks. Today ideal beauty standards use basic makeup to enhance features and not alter them. That said, there are always the fun ranges that incorporate oodles of colour to make dressing up a bit more fun.
Here are the top beauty trends that 2019 wowed us with…
Bright dramatic eyes
For a while, the au naturale look took centre stage in the beauty world but when the experts were ready to use colors, they decided to go as bold and bright as possible. Seen on the iconic Rihanna (who launched the award winning Fenty Beauty) and super model Kendall Jenner, this year saw a rise in bold colours extended outside the eyelid for dramatic eyes.
This fun and playful eyelid was featured as a signature look on many runways and on influencers. It came as a standalone look but was occasionally also paired with equally dramatic lips. The popularity of this trend drew power from the ability of bright neon tones to look great with all types of skin.

It can be used as an eyeliner and an eyeshadow both. For a more dramatic look, consider smudging it all over the eyelid. A personalized custom look can also be created by blending two pencils. They have a great option of white liner to use on the inner corner of the eye to make the eyes pop.
Another prominent trend of 2019 was floating eyeliners replacing the winged eyeliner and the cat eyes. The floating eyeliner makes use of the negative space on the eyes to create a flicked look. Originally donned by supermodel Twiggy in 1960s, the style is now resurfacing once again.
Lucy Boynton at the SAG Awards carried the floating eyeliner this year, and since then there has been a plethora of social media influencers and celebrities recreating this look. Use any colored or black eyeliner to create the look. The trick is to keep your chin up and eyes low. With such massive popularity, it is predicted that this ace 2019 trend will float well into 2020.

As the name suggests, it glides on ultra-creamy and delivers intense, long-lasting colour that stays in place. The pencil can be used with precision for a dramatic effect and slightly smudged to achieve a smoky look.
This is a beauty trend that by far stands out prominently for those who appreciate spending less on cosmetics and more on the overall health of their skin and hair. 2019 saw a massive shift towards finding skin care regimes to nurture healthy skin and give it the au naturale glow without using expensive foundations and powders. Beauty experts across the globe invested in skin care routines to restore glow naturally, using products like vitamin C, aloe vera, and others. A significant portion of the population also replaced their salon visits with those to dermatologists for hydrafacials, Q-Switch, laser hair removal, PRP techniques and the likes, biding adieu to Brazilian waxes, eye lash extensions and keratin treatments.
Get the look: Clinics such as Estheticare in Islamabad and Halycon in Lahore offer state-of-the-art treatments for skin, hair and fat reduction. Dr Tasneem Nakhoda’s Skin Institute is the place women, including celebrities, swear by in Karachi. Be warned, these treatments are expensive. However, they are investments in long lasting beauty as they don’t wash away with a splash of water. A simple hydrafacial can set your back anywhere between PKR 7000 to PKR 15,000.
Almond shaped nails with detailed artwork
Nail shape has changed from long pointy ones to almond shaped mid-length nails featuring graphics and details. As the name suggests, an almond style nail is slender on the side and retains a wide base reminiscent of an almond. The shape has been trending the past year, decorated by nail art, which is a great way to flaunt personality with options such as holographic, studded, geometric, gold glitter, dotted, colour blocked, sage style, foiled, marbled, and many more.
Get the look: Almost all salons in Pakistan offer these services; Nabila in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad is a great place to begin with. Ditto for Toni & Guy, where you can get nail art for PKR 250 per nail. Since going to the salon constantly is a difficult feat and this style is a hard one to nail (pun intended) at home, websites online offer fake nails to replace your salon visits as well.
The eyebrow game has been going strong for a few years now and 2019 was no different. Bold and strong eyebrows structure the face and give it an Instagram-worthy look. However, this year primarily saw five different types of eyebrows, namely, feathery texture, high & bright, straight tails, au naturale and soft arches. Each style of eyebrows is created to keep in mind the natural shape of the brow. The concept is to highlight and work with what is already in place as 2019 is all about celebrating minimalistic style. The key, however, is to grow the shape that is closest to the natural eyebrow shape to maintain it.
