The 2019 awards season kicked off with the 76th Golden Globes last weekend and we have to admit that our favourite part of any award-show red carpet is to zoom into the experimental beauty looks that celebrities love to flaunt year after year. There’s the classic look - always sported by red carpet favourites like Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron - and then there’s the drama you can expect when you have Lady Gaga on the red carpet.
The Golden Globes set the tone for some interesting beauty looks this year. While there were a lot of classic looks like low buns and nude lips, one saw a refreshing mix of fun and interesting stuff on the red carpet as well. Hollywood’s A-list celebrities arrived with bold and colourful makeup choices. From teal green eye shadow, electric blue lashes to lavender hair, celebrity makeup artists created looks that went well with the dresses that were picked out for the night.
Here’s a lowdown.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is known for her intriguing looks and at the red carpet the A Star is Born actress and winner for Best Song went full-on Cinderella with a punk twist. Lady Gaga wore a lavender Valentino Couture gown and was the belle of the ball, matching her gown with her lavender hair swept into an elegant up do. She sported a shimmering, and dramatic purple eye look and nude lip – a combo requisite of any red carpet. Gaga’s body art helped her persona talk through the otherwise princess-y dress.
Lupita Nyong’o
Always one to make a statement with her makeup, the Black Panther actress stayed true to her risk-taking ways. Lupita Nyong’o coordinated striking blue eyelashes and shadow, perfectly complementing her exquisite blue Raf Simons for Calvin Klein creation and Bvlgari jewels. She definitely gets points for sporting electric blue lashes and also for demonstrating how to continue wearing the world’s easiest liner trend in 2019.
Camilla Belle
Camilla Belle went the jewel-toned route with electric teal eye shadow which was not only strikingly beautiful but reflected the colours of her dress as well. She paired the show-stopping shadow moment with soft pink lipstick and lightly flushed cheeks. As for her hair, she opted for a slicked back, wet lob with dramatic side parting.
Lili Reinhart
Lili Reinhart looked captivating in a crimson fluffy dress and paired it with a sultry, red-tinted smoky eye and wore her hair in a low chignon. Her makeup artist, Adam Breuchaud, wanted to "play against the pretty-princess aspect and be more high-fashion and modern". All we can say is that the Riverdale star certainly rocked the monochromatic look.
Thandie Newton
Thandie Newton showed us how more is more with her glorious voluminous hair. She wore a silver-sequined dress that mimicked the texture of a disco ball. Her eyes were kept smoky in hues of grey with nude lips. What we like about her look is that the Westworld star went big with her hair, bringing the attention to the beauty of her natural texture.
Sandra Oh
The Killing Eve actress, Sandra Oh, who co-hosted the award ceremony with comedian Andy Samberg, channeled Old Hollywood glamour for her first look of the night – the red carpet. She chose to wear a stunning floor-length white Atelier Versace gown and sported muted red lipstick, shimmering mauve smokey eyes, and voluminous pin-up style curls.
