We’ve also come to realize that having a showcase styled can make or break a show for a designer. While most shows were relatively safe, there were examples of a good collection that got drowned out from excessive styling and a decent collection styled to leave people bewildered and confused.
Rici Melion, for example, had models with grass and flower bouquets growing out of their heads and clothes. It was garish and almost comical to watch the show and it made little sense as to how PFDC didn’t edit out the show. Arjumand Bano’s show was another with a strong fashion quotient but lacked the styling that could show it in its best light. Layering a Spring/Summer showcase doesn’t make sense because that’s not how the clothes will be worn in the peak of the summer and hair nets are a big no. Omar Farooq’s Republic was another strong collection that became the best on day three due to its edgy and young styling. There was athleisure with slouchy casual jackets, hoodies and track pants but the addition of fanny packs, on trend shades and colour combinations made Republic’s looks the stuff of NYFW street style.
Then, there were the high street brands which probably bring in revenue to the platform but what they brought to the runway was hardly fashion forward.
The council needs to help them put more fashionable items forward if they are to continue having shows at fashion week. However, in its eleventh year, each PSFW showcase has been a notch above the last and we’re happy to see the platform injecting fresh, young energy and giving equality a thought. Fashion is a space that should be accessible and relatable for everyone and so, we expect much more in the years to come.
