Transitional wardrobe: How to dress for in-between weather

Flash your style

As much as we love autumn it can be a tricky season sartorially. It’s not cold enough to start layering and it’s not hot enough to rock a summer dress. There’s no point in investing in new pieces that will barely be functional for a month before proper winter kicks in, so with some creative thinking you can repurpose whatever you already own and make a style statement. Here’s some inspiration to help you look at your wardrobe differently.

Summer Dresses

Putting away our easy, breezy summer dresses always breaks our heart. But turns out there is no need for you to pack them away for half a year. You can use your dress as a key transitional piece by layering it with lighter pieces for autumn and warmer items for full-fledged winter. If you have a skimpy summer dress that you can’t normally wear about town, add a simple button down shirt underneath and slip on a pair of mom jeans for a totally new ensemble. In the dead of winter you can replace the button down with a turtle neck for a cosy look that could be taken out of a street style star’s book.

Socks and Sandals

You read that right. Your strappy summer heels no longer make the cut. There’s no point in having freezing toes, particularly in the evening when the temperature drops but it’s not quite hot enough to pull out your boots yet. What do you do? Buy cool socks and rock them with your strappy heels like a total diva. Opt for slightly cropped jeans, pants or skirt and choose ankle high socks that are either interestingly textured or printed and you can continue wearing your summer sandals all winter long. Genius!

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits really captivated the attention of the fashion world for a few seasons a couple of years ago but quickly became overused and overexposed. Now we’re all stuck with a bunch of jumpsuits that we’re not quite sure what to do with and they’re difficult enough to get in and out of without adding the misery wearing a layer on top. The solution? Add a layer under it. Just like with your summer dresses you can wear a shirt underneath your jumpsuit for autumn and anything ranging from a sweater to a sweatshirt when it gets colder. Not only will you be warm but you’re also giving new life to a piece you already own.
