After football, golf is the fastest growing sport in the world. Most countries of the world are working on discovering new ways and means to boost the sport. But Pakistan is a different story. I’ve time and again underlined the reasons why Pakistan golf has failed to reach its rightful place, so I won’t repeat those details.
Instead, I would like to share my vision on how we can improve Pakistan golf. As a golf pro and more importantly as a coach, I’ve travelled to many parts of the world which has helped me stay in touch with what’s happening in international golf. I have been part of their system building and running processes. I have done it everywhere I went but sadly couldn’t do it in Pakistan in my motherland.
I always offer my services to golf authorities but I could never get positive response. Let me be clear. I have qualification besides playing and teaching experiences. Unfortunately one thing goes against me and it is that I was born very, very poor which is and will be my handicap till my death in Pakistani golf system where officials only accept and recognise the rich.
Pakistan has four provinces. We need one national golf academy with national golf coach heading it and some assistants teaching pros in each province on merit.
Pakistan needs provincial golf academies with head coaches and assistants teaching professionals employed by the associations. All golf club members pay some fee every month in their club bills to associations and PGF which becomes a sizeable amount. In addition, the R&A also sends an substantial amount to PGF every year to promote golf coaches. Unfortunately it’s not been used on coaches. It’s used on amateur golfers’ trips around the world.
Employed coaches would run junior teaching programmes. Also, these coaches should be teaching juniors, ladies and young, upcoming caddies. Also, the corporate sector should do golf clinics in different clubs. The federation has given jobs to a few coaches, but not on merit. Those coaches have good government jobs, so they are doing two jobs in a situation where most of the coaches do not even have one job to support their families.
Our golf is sinking faster than ever before due to favouritism. I request electronic media and print media to promote golf. One world class golfer can bring millions of dollars and present a soft image of our nation.
At present in Pakistan, golfers, coaches and caddies are going through the toughest time ever. It’s getting impossible to teach and play golf as there are no jobs or sponsorships. We need revolutions in our golfing system. We need honest, patriotic people who can be held accountable for their performance.
We lack the vision for future improvements to compete with the rest of the world. I feel and see we are fifty years behind the rest of the world. And the gap is getting bigger and bigger.
Life is given once and great people make it count for their nation to be remembered with good words and respect.
My aim is to do my best for golfers in Pakistan. Believe me nothing is impossible to achieve with right approach, hard work and future vision. We need to set high standards for our younger generation.
I want to thank all readers and supporters who encourage me to highlight our golfing difficulties. I have received more than 100 emails from around the world.
But the golfing atmosphere in Pakistan is very bleak. I am not losing hopes but we need some miracles to get out of this colonial golfing system.
