Designer HSY makes his Hollywood debut with Disney+ series Deli Boys

t looks like Pakistan’s favourite fashion guru, Hassan Sheheryar Yasin—better known as HSY—who celebrated 30 years in the industry just last year, remains as creative as ever.

A case in point is his involvement in a major Hollywood production. He has designed costumes for the new Disney+ and Hulu original series Deli Boys. He also makes an appearance in episodes 8 and 9.

Directed by Ahmed Ibrahim and Jenni Konner (Girls), the series premiered on March 6, blending dark humour with family drama and a touch of stylish mayhem.

According to a press statement, HSY is styling actors Poorna Jagannathan, Saagar Shaikh, and Zainne Saleh in episodes 8 and 9, infusing South Asian cultural elegance into the show’s gripping narrative. He was personally flown to the United States to oversee fittings on set, ensuring every look met his exacting standards.

Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “Designing for Deli Boys has been an exhilarating experience, but being part of the show, even in a small way, makes it even more special. It was an honour to contribute to a Hollywood production that highlights South Asian representation, and the entire process was an incredible learning experience—both professionally and artistically.”

Working on a series is not new for the celebrated designer. Before his Hollywood debut, HSY had already explored acting in Pakistan. In the television series Pehli Si Mohabbat (2021), he underwent a complete transformation to play Akram, a fiery, ultra-conservative older brother—a role that earned him critical acclaim.

He also hosted a talk show, Tonite with HSY, before transitioning to the big screen. By 2022, he was making waves as a villain in Ishrat Made in China.

Now, with Deli Boys, he’s not only showcasing his acting skills in a two-episode arc but also designing costumes. The show features richly developed, multidimensional South Asian characters and a narrative that is both sharp and deeply moving, reinforcing the importance of representation. Though HSY’s role is a cameo, he is the first designer from Pakistan to appear in such a production. Let’s hope this marks the beginning of a whole new chapter for him.
