Despite its abundant natural resources, Pakistan’s agriculture sector is reeling under the impact of climate change. Ranked as the eighth most affected country by climate change between 2000 and 2019, Pakistan has faced devastating natural disasters, including the catastrophic floods of 2022. These floods affected over 33 million people, devastated 8 million acres of crops and caused $12.9 billion losses. Agriculture sector bore 43 per cent of the damage. The floods destroyed essential crops such as rice, cotton and vegetables, affecting both local food supplies and export income.

These issues are being compounded by soil degradation, inadequate irrigation facilities and inappropriate fertiliser use. Statistics reveal that 99 per cent of Pakistan’s soils are deficient in nitrogen, 80 per cent in phosphorus and 60 per cent in potassium and zinc. Given a rapidly growing population of 240 million, the pressure on Pakistan’s food production systems has reached critical levels.

Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions, government support and collaborative efforts. The benefits of modernising agriculture extend beyond increased food production. Enhanced crop yields directly improve farmers’ incomes, contributing to better living standards and poverty alleviation.
