griculture has been the lifeblood of Pakistan’s economy for decades, underpinning and fuelling economic growth across the country. This vital sector not only feeds millions but also serves as a cornerstone of rural prosperity and national development. However, its resilience is now being tested like never before.
A convergence of challenges—ranging from water scarcity and climate change to outdated farming practices and resource inefficiencies—threatens to destabilise this crucial industry. As these pressures mount, the nation’s food security hangs in the balance. There is an urgent need for transformative solutions to safeguard Pakistan’s agricultural future.
Despite its abundant natural resources, Pakistan’s agriculture sector is reeling under the impact of climate change. Ranked as the eighth most affected country by climate change between 2000 and 2019, Pakistan has faced devastating natural disasters, including the catastrophic floods of 2022. These floods affected over 33 million people, devastated 8 million acres of crops and caused $12.9 billion losses. Agriculture sector bore 43 per cent of the damage. The floods destroyed essential crops such as rice, cotton and vegetables, affecting both local food supplies and export income.
These issues are being compounded by soil degradation, inadequate irrigation facilities and inappropriate fertiliser use. Statistics reveal that 99 per cent of Pakistan’s soils are deficient in nitrogen, 80 per cent in phosphorus and 60 per cent in potassium and zinc. Given a rapidly growing population of 240 million, the pressure on Pakistan’s food production systems has reached critical levels.
Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions, government support and collaborative efforts. The benefits of modernising agriculture extend beyond increased food production. Enhanced crop yields directly improve farmers’ incomes, contributing to better living standards and poverty alleviation.
The fertiliser industry plays a crucial role in safeguarding agriculture and ensuring food security by addressing the nutrient deficiencies that hinder crop productivity. By developing advanced fertilisers tailored to local soil conditions, the industry helps replenish essential nutrients and improve soil health, enabling farmers to achieve higher yields. Fertiliser companies are also at the forefront of promoting sustainable farming practices, offering precision agriculture solutions, soil and water testing services and farmer education programmes. These efforts not only enhance agricultural output but also contribute to long-term environmental sustainability, ensuring that the growing population’s food demands are met without depleting natural resources. With continuous innovation and farmer-centric initiatives, the fertiliser industry remains a vital partner in strengthening the resilience of agriculture in Pakistan.
By placing farmers at the heart of the nation’s economic framework and empowering them with the tools and knowledge they need, Pakistan can not only ensure food security but also create a sustainable future for generations to come.

Kissan Day, now in its sixth year of celebration, is a tribute to the farming community. The farmers embody resilience, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to feeding the nation, often toiling under challenging circumstances. Despite their critical role in ensuring food security and supporting rural livelihoods, their contributions frequently go unnoticed. Kissan Day seeks to rectify this by shining a well-deserved spotlight on their tireless efforts and the invaluable role they play in sustaining our economy and society.
This special day is more than just a celebration; it is a powerful acknowledgment of the dedication and perseverance farmers bring to their work. It serves as a reminder of their unyielding commitment to cultivating the crops that sustain millions of lives. By honouring farmers on Kissan Day, we not only recognise their contributions, but also renew our commitment to support them in overcoming the challenges they face.
