Wrapping up a lucrative spot on an LIV Golf League team will be harder for the 2025 season.

The Saudi Arabia-backed circuit revealed on Thursday details of its December qualifying event called LIV Golf Promotions, announcing that only the winner will receive an automatic position in the league for next season, a cut from the three spots that were available for the ‘24 campaign. The move ostensibly was made to give teams more freedom to choose their own players to fill out their rosters, and it couldn’t have helped that the three who earned promotions for last season did not fare well.

Finland’s Kalle Samooja, who played for the Cleeks, had just two top-20 finishes over 14 events in the 48-man fields, with Kieran Vincent (Zimbabwe, Legion XIII) getting one top-20 and Jinichiro Kozuma (Japan, Iron Heads) recording one top-10. Samooja and Vincent were relegated after the season, while Kozuma’s 45th-place finish puts him in jeopardy of not being picked up by a team for next year.

The trio did well at the bank, however, earning more than $7 million combined.

This year’s Promotions tournament, set for Dec. 12-14 at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia, will have the same format as last year. In the first round, winners of top amateur events around the world, as well as 15 golfers from the top 40 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, are eligible. The top five available players among the top 10 finishers in 2024 from four professional tours (Japan, Korea, Sunshine, Australasia) can also compete if they choose.

The top 20 finishers and ties after Round 1 advance to the second day, where they will be joined by players exempted into Round 2, with scoring reset. Eligibility for those spots includes relegated LIV players from 2024, winners of major golf championships, past Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players, champions and top money-list players on other pro golf tours in 2024, and golfers ranked second through eighth in the 2024 International Series, run by the Asian Tour.

The top 20 players from Round 2 head into a 36-hole final-day qualifier, with scores reset again and the top scorer earns the single promotion to LIV and $200,000. All players in the top 10 will earn full exemptions into the Asian Tour’s International Series events for 2025.

LIV Golf offers a spot to the top finisher in the International Series, and American John Catlin earned that position for 2025.
