humariyaan's electrifying guitarist, Sparlay Rawail, who often represents the hybrid-folk music group in the media, spoke to Instep about their foreign tours. The United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand are just a few of the places they’ve toured as a quartet. Since becoming a quintet, South Korea is not the only foreign destination where they've performed. They've also played in Africa with their fifth member, Obaid Khan, and more shows are upcoming.
One such event is Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to Instep, Sparlay Rawail explains that Riyadh Season is similar to a government-run program like Jeddah Season. It's akin to their version of South by Southwest (SXSW). It includes films, sporting events, cultural events, and more. “It’s the new frontier for entertainment,” he notes. “At the end of the month, Khumariyaan will be playing Riyadh Season. We are doing two shows.”
The vocalist, Obaid Khan, who joined the band when it was purely instrumental, was also part of their East Africa tour. “The East Africa tour included Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda,” revealed Sparlay Rawail.
Not only did the quintet perform in East Africa and South Korea, but they traveled to Egypt as well. Clearly, Obaid Khan has only enhanced the band’s reputation as a hybrid-folk act. His addition is a welcome enhancement to this decade-plus group.
