Black is the warmest color? No, not really. Color theory says it is the absence of color or the sum of all colors, depending on the time of day or night. For the red carpet, a monochrome “black” style means staying with one color for your outfit. But monochrome style pretty much sums up the red carpet at the Emmys, where many celebrities looked stylish, minimalistic, and chic as they chose to rock a one-color outfit. While many played it safe with black, others chose different single tones and looked classic, chic, and modern. Here are some of our favorites.
Naomi Watts
From films to television shows, limited series and anthologies, she has done it all and knows just how to pick her projects. At the Emmys red carpet, she was just as selective, opting for a one-tone, custom emerald green gown by Balenciaga. The gown’s strapless shift featured a foldover bodice and a large bow that extended into a floor-length train. She accessorized with Harry Winston jewelry, including diamond-encrusted chain-link earrings. Watts was accompanied by her husband, actor Billy Crudup, who won an Emmy for The Morning Show in the Supporting Actor category.
Matt Bomer
Dropping the classic (and now boring) tux, the actor wore a two-tone Brioni ensemble, opting for an eggplant jacket, a matching shirt, and black tapered pants. Yes, some of the men went further and gave two-tone a stylish flair. Nominated for his role in Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, he didn’t win for his performance but did make it onto plenty of best-dressed lists.
Connie Britton
She wore vintage Alexandre McQueen and black heels to go with it. But the choker jewels and the red nail polish channeled old Hollywood glam and we’re all for it.
Meryl Streep
The Devil did not wear Prada. Meryl Streep, who played the super stylish Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada several years ago, came to the Emmys in a monochromatic all-pink ensemble. Nominated for her performance in Only Murders in the Building in Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy category, she wore a sleek, light pink Alexander McQueen suit with a matching bow top. She also carried a small pink handbag and bright, pink-framed eyeglasses.
Jonathan Bailey
Jonathan Bailey looked very cool in a Giorgio
Armani suit with a silk button-up and a blazer with peak lapels. He
accessorized with Santoni shoes, and an Omega timepiece. Along with Fellow Travelers co-star Matt Boomer, Bailey brought back cummerbunds, and no one had a problem with it, probably because they knew how to carry them off.
Diane Lane
A darling of television shows in post-streaming era, Diane Lane, star of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, looked stunning in a light pink, long-sleeved gown with a beaded pattern around the neckline and belt. She paired the dress with a matching clutch and dangling earrings.
Gillian Anderson
The British actress went metallic in a textured silver square-neck gown by Emilia Wickstead, paired with a metallic clutch and Martin Katz jewelry, including black-and-white diamond earrings and rings, as well as a white gold bangle.
Joshua Jackson
There is more than one way to wear a black-and-white tuxedo, and Dawson Creek’s alum, Joshua Jackson knows it. At the Emmy Awards, he certainly made a splash, wearing a Berluti tuxedo that was perfectly tailored and looked sharp. He finished his look with Christian Louboutin Dandelion loafers and Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece. The Internet went wild the next day.
Jodie Foster
In a custom Louis Vuitton gown in dark blue with a gold slim belt, the actress, who went onto win an award, looked elegant and beautiful.
