In April this year, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the appointment of Gary Kirsten as white-ball head coach and of Jason Gillespie as the red-ball head coach while Azhar Mahmood was confirmed as an assistant coach across all formats.

The three appointments have been made for a two-year period following a recruitment process. Kirsten will be in charge of the side for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, ACC T20 Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.

Gillespie’s assignments include the ICC World Test Championship fixtures against Bangladesh (at home in August), which will be followed by Tests against England (at home in October) and South Africa (away in December) in the 2024-25 season.

Gillespie emphasised the importance of fitness as he held his first press conference. Gillespie, who is considered Australia’s one of the finest bowlers in history, is excited about working with the Pakistan cricket team.

“I have talked to Shan Masood [Pakistan’s red-ball captain] one to two times, I’m hoping we will play positive cricket. I will [also] discuss with the players about what brand of cricket they want to play, the team will be selected while taking the opposition and conditions in mind.

“If a player is good for the team, he will definitely be selected. I’m in contact with Gary Kirsten [Pakistan’s white-ball coach] for players’ workload management.

“The Pakistan cricket team is very talented but the lack of consistency in performances is the main problem, we will see how we can bring continuity and consistency in performances.” Gillespie said categorically that there will be no compromise on players’ fitness as in international cricket, there are no excuses for fitness.

One significant disadvantage is the potential lack of continuity and cohesion within the team. With different coaches for each format, players might struggle to adapt to varying coaching styles and philosophies. This can lead to inconsistency in performance, as players might find it challenging to switch mindsets and techniques when transitioning between formats.

Teams must weigh these factors carefully to determine if this approach aligns with their goals and resources, ensuring they make the best decision for their unique circumstances.

Kirsten’s first assignment with the Pakistan team was not a good one. The Greenshirts failed to qualify for the Super-8 round.

After joining the Greenshirts, Kirsten showed his ambition and said, “My goal is to unite the Pakistan men’s white-ball team, harnessing their considerable talents towards a common objective, and achieving success together on the field. There’s always an inherent expectation for the team to perform at a high level consistently. As a coach, it’s immensely gratifying to assist players in unlocking their full potential.”

For Pakistan cricket team future, Kirsten’s methods could address some long-standing issues, such as inconsistent batting performances and lack of mental resilience in high-pressure situations. His experience in handling diverse cricketing cultures and his calm, composed demeanor could help stabilise the often volatile Pakistani dressing room.
