Those occupying high positions in the board are unable to help the chairman find solutions to the problems
The Pakistan cricket team is in disarray following a dismal performance in the recently held ICC T20 World Cup in the USA. A “major surgery” announced by PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has caused turmoil within the team and the PCB.
Naqvi is facing intense criticism from former Test cricketers and administrators.
The PCB’s decision to sack selection committee members Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq, along with team manager Mansoor Rana, after the T20 World Cup has sparked a controversy. Wahab, who was earlier the chief selector, was removed from his position and given equal powers as other selection committee members after Naqvi took over as chairman. According to sources, the PCB asked Wahab to resign, but he refused, leading to his termination.
Wahab expressed his disappointment on social media, questioning how he was held solely responsible in a 7-member selection committee. Shahid Afridi, a former captain and legendary all-rounder, has come out in support of Wahab, stating that he did not understand the decision to remove Wahab and Razzaq. Afridi believes that captain Babar Azam, who has had ample chances in many ICC events and Asian events but never delivered, should be held responsible and removed from captaincy due to his lack of grit to lead the national side.
Former chief selector Haroon Rasheed has also criticised the PCB’s decision, stating that giving important posts in the Pakistan cricket team management to recently retired cricketers has hampered the team’s performance. He cited the example of Misbah-ul-Haq, who was given the important posts of Chief Selector and Head Coach despite having no experience in both fields.
Ramiz Raja, a former cricketer and commentator, emphasised the need for a thorough overhaul of the team’s structure and culture in a recent interview. He suggested that the PCB should focus on developing a strong domestic cricket system and invest in grassroots development programmes to produce talented young players.
Naqvi has held meetings with former cricketers for the betterment of domestic cricket. Naqvi has taken recommendations from many former cricketers, including Iqbal Qasim, Intikhab Alam, Wajahatullah Wasti, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Basit Ali, Sadiq Muhammad, Sikandar Bakht, Saleem Altaf, and Rashid Khan.
However, many experts believe that taking recommendations from so many cricketers may not be beneficial. Instead, Naqvi should identify the real reasons for the team’s continuous poor performance in important events. Head coach Gary Kirsten and Wahab submitted detailed performance reports after the T20 World Cup debacle, which the PCB chief should carefully consider to address the root causes of the problem.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a new training camp for the national team, which will focus on improving their performance in the T20 format. The camp will be led by Kirsten and will feature a mix of experienced players and young talent.
In a bid to boost the team’s morale, the PCB has also announced a new incentive structure, which will reward players for their performance in international matches. The structure includes cash rewards and bonuses for winning matches and achieving specific targets.
The team’s inability to perform under pressure has been cited as the major reason for the failure.
The PCB’s decision to sack the selection committee members and the team manager has also raised questions about the role of the board in the team’s affairs. Many experts believe that the board should not interfere in the team’s selection and management, and should instead focus on providing the necessary infrastructure and support to the team.
The team’s future looks uncertain, with many questions surrounding the team’s leadership, strategy, and preparation. The team’s fans are disappointed and frustrated, and are calling for a major overhaul of the team’s structure and culture.
The chaotic situation shows that those occupying high positions in the board are unable to help the chairman find solutions to the problems that have arisen because of the team’s failures.
