T20 World Cups: Pakistan’s record so far

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is starting from today with 20 teams competing for the first time ever. It is the biggest cricket tournament in ICC history.

It is also the first ICC World Cup tournament to feature matches played in the United States and along with the West Indies.

Three new teams will be welcomed to the top table, with hosts the United States, Canada and Uganda all participating in their maiden T20 World Cup tournament.

Pakistan have always been a force to reckon with in the shortest format of the game. Despite facing challenges, Pakistan have maintained their reputation as a formidable opponent in T20 cricket. However, the question remains: Can Pakistan emerge victorious in the T20 World Cup 2024?

One of Pakistan’s greatest strengths lies in its talented pool of players. The team boasts of seasoned veterans and promising young talent, ensuring a balanced combination of experience and exuberance.

Pakistan’s bowling attack is often its trump card in T20 cricket. With a blend of pace, spin, and variations, Pakistani bowlers have the ability to dismantle any batting lineup. The likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Imad Wasim provide depth and potency to the bowling unit, capable of putting the brakes on opposition batsmen and taking crucial wickets.

The tournament features powerhouse teams like India, Australia, England, and the hosts West Indies, all of whom pose significant challenges. These teams have their own set of match-winners and strategies, making the competition intense and unpredictable.

Pakistan will need to address certain areas of concern to enhance their chances of winning the T20 World Cup. One such area is consistency, both in batting and bowling.

From the first T20 World Cup (2007) to the last 2022 World Cup, Pakistan team played 47 matches, won 28, lost 18 while one ended without any result.

Pakistan has a good track record in T20 World Cups. In the first World Cup in 2007 in South Africa, the Green-shirts qualified for the final with India. Misbah-ul-Haq took Pakistan to the brink of victory but a mistimed scoop with just six runs required from four deliveries handed India the trophy.

In the 2009 event in England, Pakistan didn’t repeat mistakes and comfortably beat Sri Lanka in the final by 8 wickets.

Pakistan qualified for the T20 World Cup semi-final in the West Indies in 2010. The Green-shirts were in a good position till the 17th over. Australia needed 48 runs in 18 balls and 18 in the last over. But Michael Hussey hit three sixes and a four off Saeed Ajmal and won when it seemed that they were certain to lose.

The 2012 World Cup was played in Sri Lanka. Pakistan reached another semi-final, but lost to hosts Sri Lanka by 16 runs. Batsmen failed to chase a petty target of 140 and fell short by 16 runs.

The fifth T20 World Cup was played in Bangladesh in 2014. For the first time, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals. The Green-shirts won two and lost two matches.

The next mega event was played in India in 2016. Pakistan only won one game and lost three matches.

In 2021, the T20 World Cup was played for the first time in the United Arab Emirates. Again Pakistan reached the semi-final, but lost to Australia by five wickets.

The last T20 World Cup was held in Australia in 2022. It was one of the best tournaments for Pakistan. They qualified for the final by beating New Zealand in the semi-final by seven wickets. The Green-shirts were restricted to 138 runs in the final by England and the latter easily cashed the target.

In the exhilarating world of cricket, where moments of brilliance and unpredictability often collide, Pakistan’s hopes for T20 World Cup glory in 2024 rest heavily on the shoulders of their captain, Babar Azam. Hailed as one of the finest batsmen of his generation, Azam’s leadership prowess and batting have been instrumental in Pakistan’s victories.

However, the journey towards the T20 World Cup title is fraught with challenges and uncertainties.

First and foremost, Azam’s leadership acumen will be put to the test. Captaining a team in a high-stakes tournament demands not only tactical astuteness but also the ability to inspire and unite the players towards a common goal.

To emerge victorious, Pakistan must harness their collective strengths, address their weaknesses, and execute their game plan with precision and flair.

In the batting department, Babar stands as Pakistan’s linchpin. His elegant stroke play and ability to anchor the innings are crucial for setting formidable totals or chasing down targets. However, Azam cannot carry the burden alone. Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman and others must fire in unison to provide stability and firepower to the batting order.
