The annual Cannes Film Festival stands as one of the world's most prestigious film events. Every year, it attracts celebrities, filmmakers, actors and industry insiders from around the globe. This year's festival, which just concluded featured a mix of renowned figures and notable films. Besides the prominent movies, the red carpet was a major highlight, with attendees displaying their finest (and occasionally, not-so-finest) fashion choices. Here are some of the best dressed attendees from the festival.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett is widely regarded as one of the finest and most recognizable actors of our generation. Known for her striking red-carpet appearances at events like the Oscars and various film festivals, Blanchett’s fashion choices often make headlines. This time, her dress at the Cannes Film Festival, drew the attention of those sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. While Blanchett has not confirmed if her outfit was intended as a statement, many online believe its colours were a nod to Palestinian solidarity. Blanchett wore a figure-hugging dress with a black front, light pink back, and green lining visible through the slits. Combined with the red carpet, these elements reflected the colours of the Palestinian flag. The Australian actor, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), has previously spoken out against Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for a ceasefire and refugee support at the European Parliament last November. This has led many to interpret her latest fashion choice as another gesture of support for Palestine.
Selena Gomez, Edgar Ramirez
& Zoe Saldana
On Saturday night, Jacques Audiard’s film Emilia Perez, premiered at Cannes Film Festival to a thunderous nine-minute standing ovation. The film stars Zoe Saldana as a frustrated lawyer, Selena Gomez as a drug lord’s wife, Edgar Ramirez as a dangerous love interest, and Karla Sofia Gascon as a cartel kingpin seeking a new life as a woman. Notably, it’s a musical. Zoe Saldana dazzled in a strapless Saint Laurent black gown with pink bows and a voluminous train, complemented by playful green and pink stone jewellery. Selena Gomez wore a stunning black and white Saint Laurent gown, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline with white detailing, pairing it off with a diamond choker by Bulgari. Edgar Ramirez chose a black tuxedo with a silk t-shirt, sparking mixed reviews for its unconventional style. Apparently, it is the film of the festival if rumours are to be believed.
Lily Gladstone
Lily Gladstone has gained widespread recognition after co-starring with Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, a role that earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 2024 Oscars. Additionally, she stars in the television series, Under the Bridge. Gladstone, one of the Cannes jury members this year, has been a prominent presence on the red carpet, showcasing her impeccable fashion sense. She made a stunning appearance in a gown reminiscent of historic couture for the premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest film, Kinds of Kindness. The actress donned a custom Balenciaga gown inspired by the label’s Fall 1959 couture collection. Made from muted yellow satin, draped in a column silhouette that shimmered like liquid gold on the red carpet, its off-the-shoulder neckline and sweeping side sleeves framed her diamond necklace by Chaumet and emerald fire statements earrings from Jennifer Younger. Gladstone completed her look with bronzy eye shadow, a glossy pink lip, and a slicked-back braided bun.
Jesse Plemons & Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst dazzled in a black gown as she supported her husband, Jesse Plemons, at the Kinds of Kindness premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood actress, 42, accompanied Plemons, 36, who stars in the Yorgos Lanthimos film alongside Emma Stone. Dunst looked stunning in a black gown featuring a dropping mesh neckline and an elegant back cowl. She accessorized her look with a black hair bow, a silver diamond necklace, and matching earrings. Plemons looked sharp in a black three-piece tuxedo. The Breaking Bad actor, who plays the roles of Robert, Daniel, and Andrew in the film, appeared in high spirits, sharing affectionate moments with Dunst for several photos. The film is described by Variety as a ‘triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed when his wife, who was missing-at-sea, returns and seems different; and a woman determined to find someone with a special ability destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.’
