inger, songwriter, actor, lyricist, performer, visual artist, playback singer and producer, Meesha Shafi, is one of Pakistan’s most noteworthy multicultural artists. This description holds more merit now than ever, as Ms. Shafi recently performed with KUNE, Canada’s global orchestra, earlier this month.

Since its inception in 1886, The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) has been one of the most prestigious schools of classical and jazz music in North America.

The mission of KUNE, an initiative of The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), is to celebrate the cultural diversity of Canada through the shared language of music.

The orchestra comprises musicians from various parts of the globe, incorporating 11 musical traditions and 25 instruments to create a sonic journey around the world.

Meesha Shafi (along with Jesse Cook) was one of the two special guests who joined KUNE for its performance at the RCM’s iconic Koerner Hall, which seats 1200 people and was a sold-out event.

Shedding some light on her performance, Ms. Shafi explained that MS x KUNE featured renditions of ‘Dasht e Tanhai’ and ‘Leela’. “We closed the night with an original song that we wrote and arranged for its debut at the show. It was a duet in Arabic and Punjabi, featuring Iraqi/Canadian actor and Arabic jazz musician Ahmed Moneka (also part of KUNE) on vocals. The other guest performer was the world-famous Canadian musician Jesse Cook, known for his specialization in a neo flamenco style on guitar.”

The experience of performing with the orchestra was particularly special due to the caliber of musicians and the venue itself, noted Ms. Shafi. Koerner Hall is a purpose-built concert hall and a beautiful acoustical masterpiece of modern architecture. It is safe to say that geographical boundaries cannot restrain the talented Ms. Shafi, marking a significant achievement in her diverse career and gravitas as an artist.
