hen you think of Pakistani cinema in post-revival age, the realization that a great deal needs to be done in order to take it forward usually comes to mind.
After all, more than a decade has passed.
And yet, other than a few films that release nearly every year from a handful of production houses, a big portion is either missing altogether or needs to be improved across the board.
To that end, at an event in Karachi, Directors Guild of Pakistan (DGP) has announced a set of new initiatives for the greater good of cinema.
The effort includes “key programs designed to nurture artistic talent, foster innovation, and facilitate collaboration within the film- making community”.
In fact, at least half a dozen initiatives have been proclaimed.
‘Filmmaker Development Program’
“It is meant to provide aspiring directors access to mentorship, workshops, and resources,” noted a press statement.
The idea is to cultivate a new generation of filmmakers who will be provided advice on various aspects of filmmaking including technical ingenuity.
‘Collaboration and Networking Events’
The second part of the initiative is to create opportunities for networking and collaborations, meaning DGP will hold events where those associated with films can meet, mingle, collaborate and network, and get a moment to showcase their work to others in the hope of attracting potential collaborators.
‘Industry Advocacy and Support’
Under this label, DGP will make a conscious effort
to make sure that the rights of Pakistani directors are advocated upon in serious manner. Said a presser, “The guild will actively engage in discussions to address industry challenges, promote fair remuneration, and safeguard the creative freedom of filmmakers.”
‘International
Collaborations’
Another initiative, the fourth to be precise, will promote international collaborations. Noted a press statement, “The DGP will establish strategic partnerships with renowned film organizations, festivals, and production houses around the world. These collaborations will facilitate co-productions, exchange programs, and screenings of Pakistani films on global platforms.”
‘Film Education and Research’
This particular issue relates to film education and research. A noble goal, it is meant to highlight the importance of film research and education.
Noted DGP in a statement, “As part of its commitment, the guild will launch educational initiatives, scholarships, and research grants to support academic studies and advance the understanding of Pakistani cinema.”
Speaking about these initiatives, the membership body of Directors Guild of Pakistan (DGP) said, “We are thrilled to introduce these transformative initiatives that will shape the future of Pakistani cinema.
The Directors Guild of Pakistan is dedicated to empowering filmmakers, fostering innovation, and elevating the standards of our industry.
Through collaboration and support, we aim to nurture a thriving filmmaking community and create a lasting impact on the global stage.”
Open to emerging filmmakers – in addition to established ones – these initiatives are meant for the larger growth of cinema.
“Together, we can create a vibrant and sustainable film industry that reflects the rich cultural heritage and diverse stories of Pakistan.”
