t is often acknowledged that Eva B is Pakistan’s first and only woman who raps and is most well-known in the genre of hip-hop. This doesn’t mean that her work is regarded without reason. From songs like Coke Studio 14 hit ‘Kana Yaari’ with Kaifi Khalil and Abdul Wahab Bugti to ‘Rozi’ (Ms. Marvel), ‘Kuch Nahi Hua’ and others (which you can find on her YouTube page), there is an authenticity to her collective work and a brazen attitude that colors each song.
Her latest song, ‘Khoon Hai Karachi Ka’ for an upcoming Pakistani film, Daadal, is just as remarkable as her previous hits. Capturing the narrative of Karachi, the sprawling, gentrified, brutal and beautiful mess, is not an easy task. But with her song, ‘Khoon Hai Karachi Ka’, Eva B shows that she is unafraid and observant as a rapper. It also connects with the film as the music video opens with aerial shots of the city and news of a bomb blast, sirens blaring and news reports. Sonya Hussyn seems to be enjoying herself in this music video as Eva B raps about the love for the city and metaphors that imply the age-old story of a violent city.
Daadal, which features Sonya Hussyn, is written and directed by Abu Aleeha and is slated to release on Eid-ul-Fitr.
As the Pakistani music industry battles each other this Eid-ul-Fitr with other films scheduled to release as well, what can be said – at this juncture – that as far as music is concerned, Daadal just stole the show with this electrifying effort.
