The summer movie season is just around the corner, and Hollywood is giving us not one, not two, but at least four major superhero capers in the coming months (because what superhero fatigue). Here are the upcoming action-packed adventures that your Marvel- and/or DC-loving/hating heart can enjoy/ignore this summer.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Its production may have had to traverse a very rocky road, but the third volume in the Guardians of the Galaxy series is finally set to make its way to cinemas in a couple of weeks’ time. The upcoming chapter in the fifth phase of the struggling Marvel Cinematic Universe marks James Gunn’s exit from the franchise as he takes charge of the DC Universe.
Volume 3 finds the original Guardians returning for another adventure as Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) leads the team on a dangerous mission that might be their last.
The film will be released on May 5.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The much-anticipated sequel to 2018’s glorious Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrives this summer, and we are all kinds of excited.
This time around, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) go on a mission again a mysterious new villain but find themselves at odds with a new team of Spider-People.
Across the Spider-Verse comes out in June. A follow-up, titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released next year.
The Flash
Overshadowed very emphatically by the many Ezra Miller controversies, DC’s The Flash arrives in theatres with public opinion not entirely in its favour. But Barry Allen is just going to have to win us over as he teams up with Batman (Michael Keaton), Supergirl (Sasha Calle), and an alternative version of himself to save the world from General Zod (Michael Shannon).
We’ll see what impact (if any) retaining a contentious actor has on the film when the Andy Muschietti-directed action adventure comes to the big screen on June 16.
Blue Beetle
The 14th film in the DC Extended Universe introduces us to Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), a young man who becomes a symbiotic host to an ancient alien biotechnological relic that gives him a powerful exoskeleton armour. The character is set to be incorporated into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the future of the franchise as it transitions into the DCU.
Initially developed as an HBO Max exclusive film before being changed to a theatrical release, the Angel Manuel Soto flick is scheduled for August 18.
