Remembering Qavi Khan

S

itara-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan, Lifetime Achievement Award by Pakistan Television Corporation, PTV Award for Best Actor, Nigar Award for Best Supporting Actor - the sum of an actor’s life could be the performance citations honoring him. But for us the grandest award is the precise, sublime and beautiful work Mohammad Qavi Khan gifted to the people of Pakistan over the span of six decades. Whether he commanded our respect as a police officer in Andhera Ujala, or as he broke our hearts with his deeply moving turn in I’ll Meet You There, Qavi Khan melted into his craft. His subtle, nuanced and deliberate acting choices are a performance manual in themselves. Mohammad Qavi Khan, beloved actor and performer, was laid to rest earlier this week. He was 80.

Born November 13,1942, in Peshawar, Qavi Khan became one of the first faces out of Lahore Television with its inaugural transmission in 1964. With his youthful good looks and deep commitment to the roles he took on, Qavi Khan soon became a part of the Pakistani film industry as well. With over 200 films and television credits under his belt, his versatile talent emerged in every possible genre in the industry. He seamlessly transitioned from serious characters to comedic endeavors - he effortlessly played a range of ages. His performances were always honest and wonderfully captivating.

As it has been a delight to watch this remarkable actor woe each one of his roles with deep determination and finesse, it is equally heartbreaking to bid him farewell. Pakistan’s classical performance cache stands a tad empty today. We may have lost his earthly body, but his refined magic on screen will shine forever.
