Self-improvement : 3 shows to watch before the year ends

December 18, 2022

2022 has been very interesting, but usually interesting times lead us to lose sight of our higher selves. What with trying to get fitter, funner, and richer, we totally forgot to be a better person. But 2022 can absolutely not end till we tie up that particular loose end. Instep lists three shows you can watch to quickly learn some moral lessons, instead of learning them through actual experience. Who’s even got time for that?

The Good Place

This is such an obvious one, the name says it all. If you haven’t watched The Good Place yet, the rundown is that a ragtag bunch of dirtbags and social disasters end up in ‘the good place’, but then realize they have to actually be good to earn their spot.

There’s a lot of discussion on ethical philosophy in The Good Place, and a lot of self-realizations and breakthroughs. The characters will all go through something you might have been faced with, and sometimes it’s just reassuring to know that the problem is common enough to actually be a theme of a show.

If you have watched it and are a fan, you know exactly what we’re talking about. Nothing like some Chidi Anagonye life lessons to steer us back on the straight path.

Midnight Mass

The thing about people is, nothing is ever really black and white. It’s usually the murkiest grey you will ever find, and you know what they say: if you stare long enough into the murky greyness, the murky greyness will stare back into you.

Such are the themes running through Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass, where nothing is as it seems.

The heroes turn out to be villains, and then back to heroes, and then you’re just confused because morality is apparently relative.

The narrative is a lesson in how sometimes we are driven by love and attachment to do the impossible, the unthinkable, and why, as wrong as it may be, it makes complete sense. Be prepared to bawl your eyes out by the time the series hits its finale.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Once again, a show that spins off from the premise of four young women rescued from an underground cult camp, but throws out a lot of psychological concepts, historical and social fallacies, and debates about moral grey areas and feminism.

Even if you don’t see the point right away, you will get closer to your own thoughts about some of the things discussed.
