Corruption is our number one problem because if corruption is not curbed, the government will not be able to collect the desired tax revenue, make public expenditure more effective, get back money that is stashed in foreign countries, invite foreign direct investment, have more domestic investment, and achieve higher growth.
But corruption is not just about the greed of people for money. We are embedded in a political economy where the only way to show power is through abusing the law and the simple way to do that is ‘corruption’. Therefore, the media’s role in highlighting abuse of power is important. Moreover, there should be a robust justice system to act as a deterrent against this menace. Only then will we be able to save our system.
