A dentist, believed to be affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), was arrested at his clinic near the Empress Market in Saddar on Saturday night.

Preedy SHO Kamal Naseem said he raided the clinic with his team and, following a shootout, arrested Dr Usman Khan in possession of a Kalashnikov.

During interrogation, the official said, Khan disclosed that he was associated with AQIS since the year 2008.

He had acquired his BDS degree from the Fatima Jinnah Dental College and, later, opened a clinic near the Empress Market.

He was inspired by AQIS and joined the outfit, facilitating it financially and logistically.

The SHO said Khan was a close friend of Saad Aziz, who was arrested for his involvement in the Safoora Goth terrorist attack.

The officer said Khan was aware of Aziz’s plan to carry out the attack on members of the Ismaili community in which at least 45 people, including women and children, were brutally massacred, as he had also met Aziz on several past occasions.
