Teachers celebrate court verdict in favour of Mujahid
LAHORE
Punjab University teachers Thursday held a demonstration to celebrate Lahore High Court’s decision in favour of the appointment of Dr Mujahid Kamran as acting vice chancellor by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
A large number of teachers gathered outside the varsity’s Institute of Education and Research (IER) to welcome the decision of LHC to dismiss a petition against interim appointment of Dr Mujahid Kamran.
The demonstration was led by IER teachers including Prof Dr Aabid Hussain Ch, Dr Abdul Qayyaum Ch, Academic Staff Association office-bearers and teachers from other departments joined the demonstration. Addressing the gathering, ASA president Prof Dr Hasan Mobeen Alam, Vice President Prof Dr Abid Hussain Ch, Secretary Dr Mahboob Hussain and others said that the decision of Lahore High Court had proved a very few teachers and retired employees were fanning false propaganda to allegedly create controversy regarding appointment of the VC and wanted to malign the repute of Dr Mujahid Kamran. They said less than two dozen teachers and retired employees who had set up so-called protest camp outside Punjab Assembly were facing inquiries and had been found guilty in various allegations.
They demanded of the CM to appoint Dr Mujahid Kamran as Vice Chancellor for continuation of policies of promotion of research culture and strengthening of independent atmosphere on campus.
Meanwhile, civil society activists held a demonstration in support of Dr Mujahid Kamran in front of Lahore Press Club. According to a press release, the demonstrators demanded of the chief minister not to do take pressure of any anti-education group of a very few people and appoint education-friendly Dr Mujahid Kamran on merit for the third term. Renowned international tourist and Boy Scouts trainer Maqsood Ahmed Ch, chairman Qalam Foundation Allama Abdul Sattar Asim, Punjabi poet Khusheed Kamal, Chairman Kamal Academy, Sahibzada Allama Zia-ur-Rehman Farooqui, Munsha Qazi, Sahibzada Nasir Mahmood Naqshbandi and other members of civil society joined the demonstration.
They said Dr Mujahid Kamran established peace in Punjab University, promoted research and book reading habits and he should be appointed for the sake of thousands of students, who wanted discipline and education excellence in the university.
