The city water board’s chief, Misbahuddin Farid, called on the recently appointed commissioner, Asif Hyder
Shah, on Sunday to relay concerns over the safety of KWSB installations in
District Malir and to discuss a possible implementation of Section 144 in the area.
The KWSB chief informed the commissioner that such measures were needed to protect KWSB installations passing through Gadap Town and its surroundings, while also highlighting the apparent danger being posed to supply pipelines due to activities of the sand and gravel mafia.
Calling for stringent action to curb such illegal activities, he told Shah that KWSB infrastructure, particularly underground water supply lines around the National and Super highways, was at grave risk due to extraction and detonation techniques that were weakening the pipes.
He identified other structure that could also be damaged due to unrelenting gravel extraction including wells around Sukkhan, Pipri, Malir and Memon Goth, along with underground pipelines attached to the Kandhkot intersection.
