LONDON: Disgraced fast bowler Mohammad Amir is set to return to Pakistan on Saturday (today) after serving a three-month term at the young offenders institute in Weymouth on spotfixing charges.
Amir was released from the jail at the start of this month and the UK Border Agency (UKBA) handed over his passport to his solicitor three days ago. He will board a Pakistan International Airline (PIA) flight to Lahore on Saturday (today), a source closed to the cricketer said.
Amir will be escorted through the VIP tunnel at the Heathrow airport to avoid the media and public scrum. It is believed that he will be accompanied by his solicitor Sajida Malik and a friend, who provided legal guarantee for him before his release. A probation officer from the Prison Services will also be present with Aamer till his departure.
The 19-year-old Amir was found guilty in a scandal that rocked the cricket world in 2010. Amir, and fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif along with captain Salman Butt took bribes from bookie Mazhar Majeed to bowl no-balls in a Test match against England at Lord’s.
Undercover reporter Mazhar Mahmood from now-defunct British publication News Of The World secretly videotaped Majeed during the transaction that played a key role in securing conviction of the trio and the bookie.
The Ministry of Justice refused on Friday to talk about Amir’s departure to Pakistan. Amir’s solicitor also didn’t answer calls on Friday. However, it is believed that she has also been negotiating with the International Cricket Council for the reduction in a ban on the young pacer so that he could return to the game as soon as possible.
It is learnt that she has held meetings with the ICC officials in Doha as well as in London. Besides she has been in touch with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in this regard.
