The roads of Lahore are wide enough for traffic to run smoothly. But a major problem is the numerous turns and U-turns that have design flaws and have been creating traffic chaos and gridlocks. It is generally noticed that people take U-turns from the opposite sides of the road and come face-to-face with each other. I was caught in a similar situation while in the city recently. The journey from the Faisal Town roundabout to Akbar Chowk which normally takes three minutes to complete instead took 30 minutes. It was because of a wrong U-turn that piled up the traffic.
If U-turns are designed to allow traffic in only one direction then such traffic issues can be avoided. Our emphasis is on building roads but no efforts are being made to manage traffic. If we employ professionals things can be made easier.
