ISLAMABAD: The apex court’s Justice Qazi Faez Isa and his wife Sarina have tested positive for coronavirus and are isolating at home, the Supreme Court said in a press release.

In the statement, issued on Saturday, the apex court said Justice Isa and Mrs Sarina Isa have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2; their reports were issued by the National Institute of Health. They are quarantined at home and are under treatment.

Meanwhile, planning minister Asad Umar said the rate of Covid deaths per million people in Pakistan was the lowest in the region “due to timely decisions of the government” but warned that the “risk is not over yet”.

A total of 22,971 people have died of the disease, including 32 patients who died in the 24 hours leading to Saturday, the NCOC said.

In a tweet, the minister, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said Pakistan’s deaths per million population is 102. Compared with Iran, where some 1,037 people died; in Nepal the number is 326; India 301; Sri Lanka 186; Afghanistan 160, and Bangladesh 113.

“Timely decisions, hard work, cooperation of people and blessings of Allah made this possible.” However, he warned that “risk is not over” yet therefore the people should follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and also get themselves vaccinated against the disease.

His tweet comes as the country is faced with the fourth wave of the coronavirus, driven by the more infectious Delta variant which originated in India.

Sindh reimposed most of the restrictions after the Covid positivity ratio in the province rose above 10 per cent, while in Karachi, its largest and most populous city, more than a fifth of the tests were turning out positive.

Across the country, the NCOC recorded 1,841 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to Saturday, the NCOC said.

The NCOC, a department leading Pakistan’s campaign against the pandemic, said the country’s number of overall cases rose to 1,001,875, adding that 2,551 are in critical condition.
