Police on Thursday killed a suspected robber and foiled a government bank robbery attempt in Korangi on Thursday.
The Awami Colony police said four suspected robbers arrived on two motorcycles. They entered the bank branch and held the security guards, bank staff and clients hostage at gunpoint.
Somehow, a bank employee managed to inform the police helpline, Madadgar 15. The police reached the scene while the robbers were busy looting cash and other valuables.
In the ensuing exchange of fire with the police, one of the alleged robbers was killed while the other three managed to escape, leaving behind their motorcycles. The police confiscated three pistols and two motorcycles.
The body of the suspect was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for an autopsy where he was identified as Shahid. He hailed from Multan. Raids were being carried out to arrest the fleeing robbers, the police added.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Mahar appreciated timely action by the police and announced a cash reward of Rs500,000 and certificates for the police personnel.
