Former hockey Olympian Naveed Alam dies of cancer

ISLAMABAD: Former hockey Olympian and member of the winning team of the 1994 World Cup Naveed Alam died in Lahore on Tuesday after a prolonged battle with blood cancer, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) said. He was 47.

According to Alam’s family, the former hockey player was receiving treatment in the Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore, and he was moved to intensive care on Monday night after his health deteriorated.

Naveed Alam competed in the Atlanta Olympics and coached hockey teams from Bangladesh and China and served as the Pakistan Hockey Federation’s development director.

Pakistan Hockey Federation said: “PHF President Brig (retd) Khalid Khokhar and Secretary-General Asim Bajwa and the entire PHF family express their deepest sympathies on the sad demise of Naveed Alam.”

Separately, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on behalf of its cricketers and officials expressed grief and sadness over the demise of the former hockey Olympian. The PCB also offered its sincerest condolences to the family members and friends of the legendary Olympian.
