LAHORE: Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of the Lahore High Court on Friday overruled an office objection on a petition by Lahore former Lord Mayor Col (retd) Mubashir Javed and others seeking implementation of a Supreme Court’s judgment about restoration of local governments in Punjab.
The registrar office had objected to the maintainability of the petition and fixed it before the judge as an objection case. Justice Khan overruled the objection and directed the office to fix the petition before an appropriate bench.
The petitioners submitted that the provincial government failed to restore the local governments despite the Supreme Court issued its detailed judgment in the matter.
They said failure of the government to implement the decision amounted to contempt of court.
The petitioners requested the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the provincial government. On March 25, a three-judge bench of the SC, through a short order, had ordered restoration of local government in the province after declaring their dissolution unconstitutional. The bench released its detailed judgment on July 5.
