This refers to the letter, ‘Primary importance’ (December 31) by M Sayyad Alam Khan. The writer has highlighted the importance of primary education and the interest of Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Sirajul Haq in appointing PhD candidates as teachers.
Appointing PhD students and graduates as caretakers/advisers is a good option but appointing a PhD as a teacher at the primary level is unfair from the perspective of the teacher. Primary school teachers barely receive the respect or income that they deserve and subjecting them to that treatment after spending so many years in the pursuit of education is anything but fair. This is not a practice anywhere else in the world.
