No relief in sight

July 06, 2021

This refers to the letter ‘Cost of living’ (July 5) by Hashim Abro. Many people supported the PTI in the 2018 general elections because the party promised to provide relief to the poor. Unfortunately, after coming to power, the party didn’t deliver on its promises. The poor are getting poorer. There is no difference between the PTI-led government and the previous governments. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the PTI launched health cards. The other provinces, however, are still waiting for this initiative. Also, issues like the sugar scandal, power, gas and electricity shortage, and high inflation directly affect the poor. In recent months, the prices of essential commodities touched the sky. The shortage of CNG is making it difficult for people to travel (rickshaws are non-existent as they run on CNG). Rickshaw drivers are also complaining that their business is suffering. Power outages have made it miserable for small businesses to complete their daily targets.

It is time the prime minister paid attention to these issues. His supporters would really appreciate if he took steps to control rising inflation. If he wants to become the real leader of the poor, now is the right time to show that he cares.
