Police on Saturday arrested a local leader of a Pashtun political party over the killing of a traffic police official in a road accident in the North Nazimabad area.
A traffic police sub-inspector, Muhammad Hafeez, was seriously wounded on Friday when a Daihatsu Hijet hit him while he was performing his duty as per routine near the Abdullah College in North Nazimabad. He was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the accident, police conducted a raid in the Pahar Ganj area near Kati Pahari and arrested the owner of the vehicle, Niaz Hussain, who is said to be a local leader of a Pashtun-based political party.
Police said the arrested person’s son was driving the vehicle when the accident took place and his father helped him flee after it.
The driver had hit the traffic policeman when he had signalled him to stop to impose a fine over some traffic rule violation.
As the policeman fell on the road, he was ran over by a dumper truck. Police have also impounded the vehicle.
