A group of armed robbers stole Rs1 million and mobile phones from staff and visitors at the Ehsas Programme Centre in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 5 on Friday.
As many as six robbers robbed the staff and public at the centre after holding them hostage at gunpoint. They snatched over Rs1 million from a cash counter and stole mobile phones of the staffers and visitors. After committing the crime, they successfully fled.
According to visitors who had gone to the office collect aid, the six armed men came on three motorcycles and no policeman was present there at the time of the incident. Upon receiving the information, police reached the crime scene and inquired into the robbery. They also obtained the CCTV footage of the incident, which showed robbers fleeing the scene after completing their swift operation. Police later registered a case against unidentified suspects.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Karachi President Khurrum Sher Zaman condemned the incident and decried the absence of police at the centre. “Robbers conveniently looted the money meant to be distributed among the poor from the staff of the Ehsaas Centre,” he said in a press statement issued following the incident.
"The robbers have deprived the staff and the poor people of cash. This proves that the criminal elements involved in the incident had been wandering openly in the city.” He demanded of the Sindh inspector general of police to arrest the robbers immediately.
