SUKKUR: The first ever successful free of cost bone marrow transplant surgery was performed at GIMS Hospital in Khairpur on Monday.
The surgery was performed on 21-year-old Tahreem from Bahawalpur who was diagnosed with a plastic anaemia. A team of the Peer Abdul Qadir Shah Jeelani Institute of Medical Sciences Department of the Bone Marrow Transplant Gambat in Khairpur conducted the successful transplant surgery.
Dr Raheem Bukhsh Bhatti, Director of the GIMS Hospital Khairpur, said Dr Farhan, Head of the Department of Bone Marrow Transplant, and his team successfully conducted the bone marrow transplant surgery. He said the patients and her 24-year-old donor Shehroob are stable. He said the BMT department in GIMS is one of the biggest department’s in Pakistan.
He said bone marrow transplant surgery costs around Rs four milion in Pakistan but the entire procedure was performed at GIMS free of cost. Director Dr Bhatti termed the surgery a milestone in medical science.
