Workshop speakers link development to effective local govts

PESHAWAR: Speakers at a workshop here on Thursday linked development and prosperity to the elected governments at the grassroots.

The Local Council Association (LCA), with the support of the European Union and Commonwealth Local Government, organised the one-day workshop for conveners of the district executive committees to educate them about the Local Government Act 2019.

The participants were informed about features of the local governments that would be constituted under the Local Government Act 2019. Former district nazim of Upper Dir Fasihullah, former Peshawar district naib nazim Qasim Ali Shah, LCA general secretary Asif Ali Jah and press secretary Ali Haider spoke at the event.

They expressed the hope that the government would hold the local government elections in a transparent manner. They said that true representatives of the people could manage the local governments for providing better services to the masses.

The speakers of the workshop said that effective local governments were the only solutions to the problems being faced by the masses. They said that an efficient local government system could guarantee development and prosperity, adding that the developed countries made their success possible by establishing the best local governments.

The participants were informed about the details of the Act and the system being put in place for local governments in the districts. The awareness campaign would be organised by the LCA, districts/tehsil governments.
