Establishment of Capital Metropolitan Govt notified

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has notified the establishment of Capital Metropolitan Government and five new tehsil administrations that would come into effect on July 1.

A notification issued by the Local Council Board states, “The Local Government Elections and Rural Development Department has been pleased to notify the city local government Peshawar named as Capital Metropolitan Government comprising of all notified neighbourhood councils of district Peshawar with effect from July 1, 2021.”

A separate notification also notified Badaber, Chamkani, Shah Alam, Pishtakhara and Mathra new tehsil municipal administrations in district Peshawar with effect from July 1, 2021.

Talking to The News, Secretary Local Council Board, Khizar Hayat said that the Local Government Act 2019 specified establishment of City District Governments at divisional headquarters and tehsil governments in the rest of the province. “Currently, we are working on establishing the Capital Metropolitan Government in Peshawar. The Town-I, Town-III and Directorate of the City Local Government would be merged to constitute the Capital Metropolitan Government,” he added.

The metropolitan area would include all the neighbourhood councils of Peshawar. The village councils would be incorporated into the tehsils administrations. Besides the Capital Metropolitan Government Peshawar would have six tehsils. Five tehsils would be created out of the Town-II and Town-IV while Hassankhel had already been declared a tehsil.
