Two cops among four killed in Sanghar election rally
SANGHAR: At least four people were killed and many others sustained serious injuries during an armed clash between the workers of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and the Pakistan People’s Party in Sanghar on Tuesday.
Two police personnel were among the four people killed. The police personnel had been performing duties as guards of a PPP MPA from Sanghar. The two parties had taken out rallies as part of their respective election campaigns for the local government elections being held here on December 17.
Local government elections in the district were earlier postponed by the Election Commission of Pakistan following the killing of at least 11 people at Daraza Sharif in the Khairpur district during the first phase of polling.
As soon as the rallies reached the Rehmani Chowk in Sanghar, workers from the two parties entered into an argument. As the arguments intensified, the two sides opened fire on each other, killing four people.
Six vehicles were also damaged during the clash. The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, summoned a report on the incident from the Inspector-General of Police, Ghulam Haider Jamali.
Those killed have been identified as Gul Mohammad Marri, Gul Mohammad Shah and Constables Ashiq Marri and Nabi Bux Dero. Heavy contingents of police and law-enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to control the situation. Rangers also reached the site to keep the situation under control.
