Teach the teachers

By our correspondents

Recently, students in Sindh went through a great deal of confusion during pre-medical and pre-engineering examinations because some exam papers contained questions that were not part of the syllabus taught in government-run schools where the matriculation system is followed. Though teachers in government-run schools are required to be well-versed in the O and A level curriculum, they generally lack this knowledge. As a result, when students are confronted with a situation like the one in the recently-held examinations, they were dumbfounded at the sight of questions that were not taught to them in in school.
The two different sets of syllabi are at the roots of a decline in the pass percentage of students in Sindh. The Sindh education department needs to have a coherent policy regarding the education curriculum. If question papers are being prepared with an input from O and A level systems, then teachers in government-run schools should be instructed to enhance their spectrum of teaching.
