KARACHI: International Mohib Bacha and Mohammad Nisar Sona blasted their way into the semi-finals as no major upset was seen on the second day of the National Boxing Championship here at KPT Sports Complex on Thursday. In the 49kg quarter-final Mohib Bacha of WAPDA, who was part of Pakistan’s team for the Asian Championship in Bangkok recently, got the better of Mohammad Essa of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stroll into the last four. In the 52kg quarter-final, Nisar Sona of Navy whacked Mehroz Ali of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) with an enviable ease. In the other quarter-finals of 49kg, Dawood of Navy defeated Zafar Khan of Gilgit-Baltistan, Sheroz of Higher Education Commission (HEC) overcame Ubaid of PAF, while Hasnain of Army got the better of Jehanzeb Khan of KPT. In 52kg quarter-final, Mohammad Farooq of Army overpowered WAPDA’s Hamza. In the pre-quarter-finals in 69kg, Muneer Ahmed of Navy beat Jamal Shah of Balochistan, international Arshad Hussain of FAF defeated Abdul Qadir of FATA, while Zeeshan Ahmed of Islamabad overpowered Nouman Khan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the same category, Army’s Mohammad Qasim got the better of Ali Ahmed of Railways, while Balaj Razzaq of Sindh beat Bilal Haider of Punjab to qualify for the quarter-finals. In the 75kg pre-quarter-finals, Faisal Khan of Balochistan beat Jehangir of KPT, Mohammad Asif of Army overpowered Faraz Ahmed of Islamabad, Farrukh Javed of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa beat Rafiullah of FATA, Afzal Khan of Gilgit Baltistan whacked Sindh’s Mohammad Mohsin and Navy’s Tanveer Ahmed got the better of Jamal Nasir of WAPDA. In 81kg pre-quarter-finals, Nisar Ahmed of WAPDA defeated Munawar Ali of K-Electric, Asmatullah of Balochistan got the better of Amruddin of FATA, Sabir Baloch of Railways overcame Tahir Khalil of HEC and Army’s international boxer Awais Ali Khan overpowered Navy’s Dur Mohammad. In 91kg pre-quarters, Asad Khan of Balochistan beat Waqas Salim of KPT, Army’s Ahmed Ali overcame Irfan of Punjab, while FATA’s Bazir Khan beat Zia-ul-Haq of KP. In the 91kg +, international Mirwaiz of WAPDA got the better of Abdul Karim of Balochistan, international Mehmood-ul-Hasan of PAF beat Sindh’s Ubaid, Navy’s Majid Ali prevailed over Punjab’s Qasim, while Taimur Khan of Gilgit-Baltistan lost to international Yasir Javed. Meanwhile, in the general body meeting of Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) held here on Thursday no serious matters were discussed. Insiders said that nobody talked about how the PBF was being run. They said that the differences between the PBF secretary Iqbal Hussain and president Doda Bhutto were ignored. “I was surprised that nobody even touched these things,” a source said. It was agreed that all the stakeholders would jointly work for the promotion of boxing. It was also decided that keeping in view the international requirements, women boxing would be made functional. A resolution was moved to demand that a fund should be created through which ailing and poor former international boxers could be supported. It was proposed if a boxer gets an international medal, 20 percent of the prize money should be given to his coach as well.
