Tourism can be a potential tool for change in Pakistan as it possesses a diverse array of tourist attractions. From the ruins of the Indus valley civilisation in the south to the mesmerising greenery in the north, and a rich cultural heritage left behind from the Mughal era, Pakistan can earn tremendously from tourism. However, the label of ‘terrorism’ by foreign media outlets has led to the country’s image being tarnished in the eyes of foreigners.
In 1960-1970, Pakistan was known as a friendly country to visit, but due to bad security, shabby roads and lack of planning, Pakistan stood at 122 out of 140 in the world tourism index in 2013. The government has failed to implement plans made to develop the tourism sector. Furthermore, some political factions have halted development in certain areas for their own political agendas. Our weak tourism industry needs to be revived by the government through efforts to attract investment. Only then can Pakistan recall its glory days of tourism.
